Obesity is clearly a plausible confounding factor in this present study; in 106 patients with available BMI data, there is an association of BMI and ALT (r s =0.15), which is of borderline significance (p=0.07).

Overall, a SeHCAT value of <15% was associated with an increased risk of gallstones or cholecystectomy (OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.04 to 3.92, p<0.05, figure 2 ) and the presence of PBAD was associated with gallstones, although this did not reach statistical significance (OR 1.98, 95% CI 0.65 to 5.99, p=0.23).
