The meta-analysis revealed that BMI levels were not significantly higher in HGVG than in LGVG (mean difference [MD] = 0.28 kg/m 2 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] -0.1 to 0.67) with evidence of heterogeneity between studies (I 2 = 32%; P = 0.16), and reduced BMI levels also did not reach statistical significance (MD = 0.01 kg/m 2 , 95% CI: = − 0.07 to 0.09; I 2 = 23%; P = 0.28) (Table 3 , Additional file 1 : Figure S1).
