The treatment arm showed a trend towards increased risk of death failure (183 deaths and 19 myocardial infarcts, producing 202 primary events, compared to 164 events (150 deaths, 14 myocardial infarcts) and vascular access (39% versus 29%) and the trial was terminated before completion on the grounds that the study was unlikely to show benefit from normalisation.
