When compared with the ICS regimen, the ICS/FABA regimen had higher of exacerbations (RR = 1.50, 95%-CI = [1.15, 1.96], P = 0.003, I 2 = 18.4%) and severe exacerbations (RR = 1.40, 95%-CI = [1.07, 1.84], P = 0.014, I 2 = 0.0%), a significant reduction in the percentage of asthma symptom-free days (SMD = −0.27, 95%-CI = [−0.41, −0.14], P < 0.001, I 2 = 0.0%), more rescue medication required per day (SMD = 0.22, 95%-CI = [0.08, 0.35], P = 0.001, I 2 = 49.5%) and reduced FEV 1 % predicted (SMD = −0.36, 95%-CI, [−0.69, −0.03], P = 0.033), but did not reach statistical significance on the nocturnal awakening times.
