Procalcitonin displayed good performance for discriminating bacterial gastroenteritis from IBD [area under the curve (AUC), 0.727; P < 0.001], and its serum levels were higher between patients with active or inactive IBD, although such difference did not reach statistical significance (0.052 ng/mL vs 0.003 ng/mL, P = 0.416).
