Specifically, if a positive trend is found in our pilot study, it may be the initial point for the development of a prospective comparative study in a larger sample size, including also the analysis of additional vascular biomarkers, such as matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), which is an elastin-degrading enzyme that may have a direct correlation with the vascular changes evaluated by color Doppler imaging.
