Analysis of bacterial genomes from an evolution experiment with horizontal gene transfer shows that recombination can sometimes overwhelm selection.

This difference, though only marginally significant (two-sided Welch’s t -test, p- value = 0.035), suggests that nonsynonymous mutations that arose during the STLE were under stronger positive selection than those that occurred by non-homologous recombination.
