Examining confocal sections of these hearts, we measured intracardiac myocardial density as the area fraction occupied by cardiomyocytes within the outer third of the heart, and observed a strong trend towards reduced trabecular area in juvenile mutants and a significant reduction in adult mutants (Fig. 3 C–E).
