SUS activity was relatively uniform across the phloem, cambium, and expansion zones, and showed a clear trend of increased activity across the zone of secondary cell wall formation, with the activity in the later part of this zone being 2-fold higher than in the cambium or expansion zone ( Fig. 2B ) After reaching a maximum at the end of the secondary cell wall-forming zone, SUS activity then began to decrease steadily towards the end of the maturation and cell death zone ( Fig. 2B ).
