By linear regression analysis we observed a significant trend between: (i) the number of infections and the percentage reduction in GAS bioburden following the next infection ( R 2 = 0.7844, p < 0.001); (ii) the number of GAS infections and the number of ASCs ( R 2 = 0.6896, p < 0.001); and (iii) the number of ASCs and percent reduction in GAS bioburden ( R 2 = 0.7942, p < 0.001) (Supplementary Fig. 1a–c ).
