In in vivo studies, the changes of Asp levels in the five brain regions of rats during the process of anaesthesia showed a trend of a decrease followed by an increase, suggesting that xylazine may inhibit Asp synthesis and release, reducing excitatory neurotransmitter and receptor binding, ultimately reducing the excitability of neurons and producing anaesthetic effects.
