Although results did not reach statistical significance, MS samples had an increased frequency of samples containing greater than 10 cells/mm 2 (+++) of either CD138 or LMP-1 compared with controls ( figure 5, A and B ), suggesting that control of an EBV infection may be diminished in patients with MS, resulting in an increased presence of EBV-infected plasma cells vs that seen in healthy controls.
