Patients in the complication group showed a trend to have higher plasma levels of IL-8 at the end of surgery and on the first postoperative day compared to the non-complication group (21 (interquartile range: 13–53) vs. 16 (interquartile range: 11–22) pg/ml and 31 (interquartile range: 13–49) vs. 19 (interquartile range: 12–33) pg/ml; P = 0.065, P = 0.16 respectively) ( Fig 2 ).
