In 57 studies with cross-sectional data published from 2004 to 2018, the number of ALS patients showed a marked trend towards a considerably higher number of included patients in the more recent studies (Spearman Rank order correlation between number of included subjects per year and the year of publication, ρ = 0.87, p < 0.0001), whereas the total number of published studies over years of publication remained constant ( ρ = 0.41, p = 0.12, Spearman Rank order correlation) (Supplementary Figure 1 ).
