The pattern of baseline scavenger receptor expression that we observed in subjects with COPD and Sm were consistent with a mixed M1 (increased SR-AI expression) and M2 phenotype (increased MARCO and reduction in SR-AI), with statistically significant increases in expression of both SR-AI and MARCO in Sm and COPD-S as compared to NoS, and only MARCO in COPD-ES (though SR-AI is still elevated in COPD-ES above NoS, this difference did not reach statistical significance).
