While not significant, the meta-analysis also showed a trend toward worse outcome if exposed to hyperoxia following traumatic brain injury. 12 A newly published review and meta-analysis of 25 different randomized controlled trials comparing conservative oxygen use with liberal oxygen use found increased mortality with liberal oxygen use. 13 It is worth noticing that the absolute difference in mortality in the different randomized controlled trials is small; however, combined in a meta-analysis, it results in a significant difference in in-hospital mortality.
