Although only a subgroup of our ICU patient cohort was available for longitudinal follow-up analysis, our study revealed a clear trend of a rapid restoration of lymphopenia and low T cell counts within 48 h in patients that subsequently survived the critical illness, while patients that subsequently died failed to restore these alterations within 48 h.
