The same authors also reported a positive effect of environmental enrichment on active behaviours, but in our study this effect did not reach statistical significance. “Social activity” was significantly lower in LL; in fact, the presence of material that could be manipulated seemed to distract the animals from social interactions (both aggressive/damaging and non-aggressive), and this effect was particularly pronounced in the LL group, where the animals could effectively avail themselves of both logs and chains.
