Interestingly, AF patients above the age of 70 years observed approximately 40–50% reduction in stroke risk (both ischaemic and haemorrhagic) when prescribed a DOAC compared to warfarin, with the exception of AF patients above 90 years of age who showed a trend for an increased risk of haemorrhagic strokes when prescribed a DOAC ( Fig 2C ).
