Within season pairwise comparisons between exclosures and controls were not significant after adjusting α for multiple comparisons (α = 0.013); however, fall growth rates of males in exclosures (0.23 ± 0.05 g/day) compared to controls (0.08 ± 0.05 g/day) approached significance ( t = −2.24, d.f . = 288, P = 0.026).
