In contrast, during the IBI, SP increased the average spiking frequency of pre-I neurons from 5.1 ± 1.0 Hz to 9.9 ± 1.8 Hz (p<0.01), and in all cases increased the slope of the pre-inspiratory ramp (average of 1.7 ± 0.8 to 3.7 ± 1.9 Hz/sec), although this did not reach statistical significance (p=0.113) due to the large variability among neurons ( Figure 3D,E ).
