Interestingly, the authors found a trend toward increased ventilator days and ICU length of stay in the APRV group; however, this finding did not reach statistical significance and may have been related to a significantly higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score in the APRV group. 35 Although the design and intervention of the 2 studies evaluating APRV in trauma patients were not identical, the results of Maxwell et al’s 2010 study directly conflict with those of Putensen et al’s 2001 study.
