For example, a strong trend toward increased mortality has been found in thrombocytopenic patients (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.50, but without reaching statistical significance) [ 43 ], although it is conceivable that thrombocytopenia might be a surrogate for general debility and/or other clinical factors, such as possible sepsis and hematological abnormalities that could contribute to overall mortality.
