In more detail, the duration of human metapneumovirus excretion in the eight children undergoing multiple sampling during follow-up showed a trend towards persistence of virus shedding for more than 2–3 weeks in patients with pneumonia or bronchiolitis, whereas patients with upper respiratory tract involvement shed virus mostly for less than 7 days.
