In contrast to the overall results of the TRICC RCT 39 (which showed a trend toward reduced mortality in patients randomized to the restrictive strategy arm), the subgroup analysis of 257 patients with ischemic heart disease showed a trend toward reduced mortality in the liberal strategy arm. 252 For this reason, the FOCUS RCT 250 enrolled 2600 patients to determine whether subjects with cardiovascular disease or cardiovascular risk factors undergoing surgical repair of hip fracture benefit from a higher (<10 g/dL) vs lower (<8 g/dL) transfusion trigger.
