5–9 The 2016 WHO diabetes profile estimates a current DM prevalence of 4.3% in Tanzania and illustrates a clear trend of rising numbers for the past three decades. 10 However, this might not reflect the true burden of this chronic disorder, because according to the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) Diabetes Atlas from 2017, an estimated majority (>60%) of DM remains undiagnosed in SSA.
