Interestingly, inflammation level in the two groups of patients showed a strong trend towards a positive correlation ( χ 2 = 4.167, P = 0.041 ) ( Supplementary Figure 1 and Table 1 ), indicating a more pro-inflammatory microenvironment in patients with advanced fibrosis although their viral parameters and other clinical characteristics were comparable.
