In 1990s, a meta-analysis of the treatment of sepsis with corticosteroids showed a trend toward the increased mortality ( relative risk (RR) = 1.13, 95% CI : 0.99–1.29) and gastrointestinal bleeding ( RR = 1.17, 95% CI : 0.79–1.73). 37 The authors concluded “Current evidence provides no support for the use of corticosteroids in patients with sepsis or septic shock, and suggests that their use may be harmful”.
