Although it did not reach statistical significance, an apparent trend toward decreased UPEC burden in bladder of acidotic HeJ mice likely resulted from increased diuresis caused by ammonium chloride supplementation of the rodent diet (dark cycle urine volume [ml/mouse per day]: 2% NH 4 Cl diet = 1.5 ± 0.2,; p < .05 versus normal rodent diet = 0.80, Table 2 ).
