As compared with the best category of the pulmonary outcome (category 1: ability to perform usual activities with minimal or no symptoms), the rate ratio for a sustained recovery was significantly below 1 for patients in each of the other categories, with a clear trend toward a longer sustained recovery time in patients with more severe illness.
