A meta-analysis found that the GCIPL, RNFL, and choroid were all thinner in individuals with AD.[ 108 ] These findings support the hypothesis that AD affects both cerebral neurons and the ganglion cells of the retina.[ 108 ] While a similar trend was found in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), often a precursor to AD, this effect did not reach statistical significance.[ 108 ] However, a study in amyloid-proven AD cases only found an association with macular thinning, not the RNFL.[ 109 ] Another study in “preclinical AD,” defined as cognitively normal individuals with amyloid pathology on positron emission tomography, also found no association with RNFL thinning
