We found a close link between treatment regimen and side effects as revealed by a linear regression model in which the mere number of drugs taken simultaneously explained a highly significant ( p < 0.001) proportion of the observed variance in side effects irrespective of the substances involved: 17.8% of the variance of sexuality-related side effects, 11.8% of the variance in gastrointestinal disturbances, 13.3% of the variance in cardiac-respiratory disturbances, and 18.4% of the variance in cardiovascular disturbances.
