Whither geographic proximity? Bypassing local R&D units in foreign university collaboration.

In our data on major firms in the global biopharmaceutical industry, we observe a clear trend toward a greater role of firms’ major R&D laboratories abroad, which in the most recent years in the observation period (2011–2015) have been responsible for more than a third of the main laboratory activities in scientific research.
