Chemically synthesized Gb₃ glycosphingolipids: tools to access their function in lipid membranes.

In a series of experiments with SM with different fatty acids ranging from C 16:0 to C 24:0 , we saw a clear trend that the partition of Gb 3 into the l o phase was favoured for SM harbouring fatty acids with 18 or more carbon atoms, which might indicate that the packing into the l o phase is favoured if the chain lengths match with the possibility to interdigitate (Fig. 9 ).
