Finally, the strongest predictor of death was a diagnosis of an organic mental disorder, such as dementia (OR 22.5; CI 3.6–139.7; p = 0.001). It is of note that a principal diagnosis of intellectual disability was also associated with a trend toward a higher risk of death, but the variable did not reach statistical significance, probably due to the small number of death events in our study (OR 5.0; CI 0.6–45.4; p = 0.1).
