Reduced utilization of tryptophan as an energy source has been reported in individuals with ASD [ 33 ], and the same trend has been observed in PMS 2, 3, and 4, while in PMS 1 the differences did not reach statistical significance and in PMS 5 an increased utilization of tryptophan as compared to controls was detected (Fig 2 in S2 File ).
