They found that before β-blockers, large-volume paracentesis significantly decreased the systemic vascular resistance (1,896 to 1,348 dyn·s·cm -5 ; P =0.028) and peripheral vascular resistance (measured in the forearm) (47 to 30 mmHg·min·dL·mL -1 ; P =0.04); and cardiac output also increased, but did not reach statistical significance (3.9 to 4.5 L/min; P =0.06).
