An early study showed a numerical benefit, but this did not reach statistical significance (TORCH). 21 This threshold was finally passed with the IMPACT study, when the ICS (FF), either with dual BD (umeclidinium and vilanterol) or vilanterol (FF/VI), proved superior to the dual BD. 35 This is likely a result of FF – one of the most recent glucocorticoids to be developed – which has the highest receptor-binding properties of all ICS with pronounced anti-inflammatory effects and a reduction in exacerbations.
