In 1 study, a lower cumulative fluid balance and a negative trend in body weight during hospitalization were associated with improved survival. 17 A subsequent observational study found that a 25% reduction in pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) among ARDS patients during their ICU course was associated with reduced mortality. 20 However, the observational nature of these studies limits the ability to make any statements of causation.
