A recent review of published studies showed a trend toward decreasing salivary flow rate days and months after HSCT and reported compositional changes in saliva reflecting an inflammatory response directly after HSCT, followed by increases in salivary antimicrobial defense mechanisms at 6 mo after HSCT ( van Leeuwen et al. 2019 ).
