Primary outcomes measures After controlling for baseline hemoglobin levels, we observed statistically significant differences in hemoglobin levels between the groups on postoperative day 1 of 7.09 g/L (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.22 to 11.96 g/L, p = 0.005) and on postoperative day 2 of 9.04 g/L (95% CI 3.53 to 14.55 g/L, p = 0.002), but the difference failed to reach statistical significance by postoperative day 3 (5.87 g/L, 95% CI −0.13 to 11.86 g/L, p = 0.06) ( Figure 2 ).
