In post‐mortem human AD brain samples, TSPO expression was demonstrated in microglia, macrophages and astrocytes but also in cells surrounding Aβ plaques [ 62 ] and only marginally significant differences in TSPO protein expression were found in temporal and frontal cortex between AD patients and healthy controls [ 63 ].
