Association between CSF-NfL and brain volumes at baseline When adjusted for age at baseline, sex and disease duration, higher CSF-NfL concentrations were significantly associated with lower MRI volumes of thalamus (β −1.9; 95% CI −3.0 to −0.7, p = 0.002), nucleus accumbens (β −0.17; 95% CI −0.30 to −0.04, p = 0.009), and higher square-rooted T1- (β 1.7; 95% CI 0.9 to 2.5, p < 0.001) and T2-lesion volumes (β 2.3; 95% CI 1.2 to 3.4, p < 0.001). ( Table 2 ) Lower volumes of whole brain, white matter, deep grey matter and putamen were also associated with higher CSF-NfL, but did not reach statistical significance ( p -values between 0.01 and 0.05).
