Introduction Over the last 20 years, there has been a clear trend in thyroid and parathyroid surgery in the use of intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) to support identification and dissection of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), facilitate assessment of vocal cord (VC) function and voice outcomes, neurophysiological research, surgical education and training, and medico-legal issues related to loss of VC function ( 1 – 15 ).
