49 Key highlights from their ROS production assessment demonstrated that: V 2 O 5 produced the most hydroxyls upon radiation (further increased in comparison to its production of hydroxyls at baseline, i.e., without radiation, which was already significantly greater than other NPs), while lanthanides did not produce any (both at baseline and with radiation), TiO 2 showed a trend toward increased superoxide anion production with radiation, MoO 3 demonstrated a protective effect as highlighted by the decreased superoxide anion level detected compared to water, and the following NPs induced a protective effect regarding singlet oxygen production: V 2 O 5 , NiO, CuO, MoO 3 , (Z between 23 and 42), Nd 2 O 3 , Eu 2 O 3 , Gd 2 O 3 , Dy 2 O 3 (Z between 60 and 66). 49 As previously explained, this suggests that surface chemistry of NPs may be the key parameter instead of atomic number.
