After conducting the meta-analysis of cortisol response to stress for these studies, ( Klimes-Dougan et al., 2014 , Ming et al., 2017 , Shenk et al., 2015 ) adolescents with MDD (n = 101) had higher cortisol levels in response to stress compared with adolescents without depression (n = 148), but this did not reach statistical significance (SMD = 0.32, 95% CI −0.01, 0.64, p = .06).
