Importantly, expression of the pre-spliced HAC1* also largely restored virulence of the ire1 Δ mutants; the prolonged survival of mice infected with these strains compared to mice infected with the wild type did not reach statistical significance ( Fig 11A , left), and kidney fungal burdens in the two groups of mice were also similar ( Fig 11B ).
