The second randomized controlled trial, the UK lung study, showed a trend toward improvement of pulmonary function with six intravenous pulses of cyclophosphamide combined with low-dose prednisolone followed by azathioprine compared to placebo after 12 months. 19 The third study was the Scleroderma Lung Study II (SLS II), comparing oral cyclophosphamide for 12 months followed by placebo with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) for 24 months.
