In the 1040 patients with GCS score ≥ 8, there was a significant trend toward a stepwise increase in hospital mortality as the quartile of the timing of tracheostomy increased (OR for quartile increment: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.18–1.51, p for trend < 0.001).
