In addition, the use of different staining and imaging protocols (immunofluorescent staining of UEA-1 versus Alcian blue staining) could account for some changes, which would explain why including crypt-top UEA-1-positive cells in our calculations resulted in a decrease that did not reach statistical significance (data not shown).
